EN 1.4571 ASTM A403 WP316Ti Ti-Stabilised ★ German Standard

316Ti Buttweld Pipe Fittings

EN 1.4571 (X6CrNiMoTi17-12-2) / ASTM A403 WP316Ti — titanium-stabilised 316 stainless steel. The dominant specification in German engineering contracts (AD 2000, TÜV) and common in Central European projects. Corrosion performance essentially equal to 316L (EN 1.4404) — Ti stabilisation provides anti-sensitization assurance up to 550°C. EN 10253-2 Type B. EN 10204 3.1/3.2. PED 2014/68/EU.

Note: 1.4571 (316Ti) is primarily an EN designation. ASTM coverage of WP316Ti in A403 is limited — projects specifying 1.4571 are generally European and will call out EN 10253-2 Type B as the fitting standard.

Mo content differentiates 316Ti (1.4571) from 321 (1.4541) — the Mo addition provides the pitting resistance (PRE ~24) characteristic of 316 grades. Ti ≥5×C prevents sensitization up to 550°C.

Heat Treatment & Welding — 316Ti / 1.4571

✓ No PWHT Required — solution annealed. Ti stabilisation up to 550°C.

EN 1.4571 / 316Ti fittings are supplied in the solution annealed condition. No post-weld heat treatment is required. Titanium stabilisation provides protection against sensitization up to 550°C service temperature, making 1.4571 particularly suitable for applications with prolonged elevated-temperature service within that range.

Welding Guidance

  • Filler metal (GTAW/TIG): ER316L or ER316Ti (where available). ER316L is widely used and produces a weld with corrosion resistance equivalent to the base metal in most service conditions.
  • SMAW filler: E316L-16 or E316Ti-16.
  • Inter-pass temperature: ≤150°C to minimise HAZ grain growth.
  • No preheat required for standard wall thicknesses.
  • ASME P-No.: 8, Group 1.

1.4571 (316Ti) vs 1.4404 (316L): Corrosion Comparison

1.4571 and 1.4404 have essentially the same corrosion resistance (PRE ~24, same Cr/Ni/Mo target chemistry). The primary difference is the sensitization prevention mechanism — Ti stabilisation in 1.4571 versus low carbon (C ≤0.030%) in 1.4404. Both are fully acceptable per PED 2014/68/EU. The choice is driven by project specification: 1.4571 is the default in German and Central European engineering; 1.4404 (316L) is standard for the rest of the world.
