EN 10253-2 Type B PRE ~24 C ≤ 0.030% — Sensitisation-Free Most Widely Specified SS

EN 1.4404 (316L) Pipe Fittings

X2CrNiMo17-12-2 · ASTM A403 WP316L · S31603 · PRE ~24

The most widely specified stainless steel for chemical process, pharmaceutical, food & beverage, and general industrial piping worldwide. Low carbon (C ≤ 0.030%) prevents intergranular sensitisation in the weld HAZ. 2–2.5% Mo provides chloride resistance beyond 304L. The default SS grade for UK, Netherlands, Scandinavia, and USA projects.

Typical Applications — EN 1.4404 (316L)

Chemical & Process Industry
  • • General chemical process piping
  • • Organic acid service (acetic, formic, citric)
  • • Weak inorganic acid service
  • • Chloride environments (moderate — up to ~500 ppm)
  • • Cryogenic service to -196°C (austenite stable)
Pharma, Food & General
  • • Pharmaceutical process and clean utility piping
  • • Food & beverage processing
  • • Brewery and dairy equipment piping
  • • Water treatment plant piping
  • • Marine and offshore (moderate chloride)

When 316L (1.4404) Is NOT Enough — Upgrade Path

Chloride > 1000 ppm or seawater: Specify Duplex 2205 (1.4462) — PRE ≥35, 2× yield strength
Germany/Italy/CE Europe convention: Specify 316Ti (1.4571) — same performance, preferred W.Nr. in those markets
High-temperature cycling >425°C: Specify 316Ti (1.4571) — TiC stabilisation prevents sensitisation at service temperature
Bleach plant, FGD, concentrated seawater: Specify 254 SMO (1.4547) — PRE ≥43
Pharma WFI, nuclear, fatigue: Specify 1.4435 (316L Nuclear) — delta ferrite ≤1 FN
