WPHY52 High-Yield Pipeline Pipe Fittings
ASTM A860 WPHY52 / EN L360NB — high-yield microalloyed carbon steel buttweld fittings for oil & gas transmission and gathering pipelines. Strength-matched to API 5L X52 line pipe, with controlled carbon equivalent for field weldability. Elbows, tees, reducers, caps and barred tees to ASME B16.9 / MSS SP-75. EN 10204 3.1 standard; 3.2 TPI on request.

WPHY52 Grade Equivalents
| Standard | Designation | UNS / EN Number | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| ASTM A860 | WPHY52 | — | High-yield buttweld fittings |
| API 5L | X52 (L360) | — | Matching line pipe |
| EN 10208-2 | L360NB | — | European pipeline steel |
| MSS SP-75 | WPHY52 | — | Large-diameter pipeline fittings |
WPHY52 fittings are strength-matched to API 5L X52 line pipe so pipe and fittings form a consistent welded pipeline system. Minimum yield strength 360 MPa (52 ksi).
Chemical Composition — ASTM A860 WPHY52
| Element | C | Mn | P | S | Nb | V | Ti | CE (IIW) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Max | ≤0.20 | ≤1.60 | ≤0.025 | ≤0.015 | ≤0.05 | ≤0.08 | ≤0.04 | ≤0.45 |
Low carbon with Nb / V / Ti microalloying delivers strength through grain refinement rather than carbon, keeping the carbon equivalent (CE) low for good pipeline field weldability. Nb + V + Ti total is capped per ASTM A860.
Mechanical Properties — ASTM A860 WPHY52
| Property | Metric | Imperial |
|---|---|---|
| Tensile Strength (min) | 455 MPa | 66 ksi |
| Yield Strength | 360–530 MPa | 52–77 ksi |
| Elongation | ≥20% (per spec formula) | ≥20% |
| Charpy Impact | Per supplementary requirement / project | S-req. |
Yield strength matched to API 5L X52. Charpy V-notch impact testing at a specified temperature is available as a supplementary requirement for low-temperature or fracture-control pipeline projects.
Heat Treatment & Weldability
Supply Condition
Normalised, or normalised-and-tempered, after forming to develop the fine-grained microstructure and specified yield strength.
Field Weldability
Controlled carbon equivalent (CE ≤0.45) allows standard pipeline girth-welding procedures. Preheat per CE and wall thickness.
Filler Metal
Matching X52-class filler (e.g. cellulosic or low-hydrogen electrodes) selected to overmatch pipe yield strength per the pipeline WPS.
Typical Applications
Oil & Gas Transmission
Cross-country crude oil and natural gas transmission pipelines built to API 5L X52, where fittings must strength-match the line pipe.
Gathering Lines
Upstream gathering and trunk lines connecting wellheads and stations to processing facilities.
Gas Distribution
High-pressure gas distribution mains and city-gate manifolds using barred tees for pig passage.
Pump & Compressor Stations
Station piping and manifolds where high-yield fittings maintain pipeline pressure rating through direction and size changes.
High-Yield Pipeline Grade Comparison
| Grade | Min Yield | API 5L Match | EN Equivalent |
|---|---|---|---|
| A234 WPB | 240 MPa | Gr. B | P235GH |
| A860 WPHY52 | 360 MPa | X52 | L360NB |
| A860 WPHY60 | 415 MPa | X60 | L420NB |
Select the WPHY grade whose minimum yield matches the API 5L line-pipe grade of the pipeline (X52 → WPHY52, X60 → WPHY60) so that fittings and pipe share the same pressure rating.
