Custom Length Pipe Bends

Any radius  |  Any angle  |  Tangents to your length

Standard elbows come in fixed angles and have no straight ends. A custom pipe bend is made from one length of pipe to your drawing: the radius, the bend angle and the straight tangent at each end are all chosen for your routing. That removes field cuts and extra girth welds, and keeps welds away from the bent section. Send us your isometric or a sketch with the dimensions and we will confirm what can be made in one piece.

What we can make to your dimensions

Odd anglesAny bend angle, not only 45° and 90°. Useful for matching terrain on pipelines and for tie-ins where a standard elbow would need a mitre cut.
Long and unequal tangentsStraight lengths at each end, made to your figures. A long tangent can replace a pup piece and its girth weld.
Multiple bends in one pipeTwo or more bends in one length, in one plane or in different planes, where the geometry and pipe length allow.
Non-standard radii4D, 6D, 7D, 10D or a radius in millimetres from your stress analysis.
End preparationBevel to ASME B16.25, plain ends, or ends machined to match the bore of your connecting pipe.
Heat treatmentPost-bend heat treatment as required by the grade and code, with records on the certificate.

How to give us the dimensions

DimensionWhat to tell us
Size and wallNPS or OD, and the minimum wall needed after bending
Radiuse.g. 5D (say if D is nominal size or OD), or radius in mm
AngleBend angle in degrees
Tangent A and BStraight length at each end, measured from the tangent point
Plane / rotationFor two or more bends: angle between bend planes and the straight length between bends
TolerancesYour project tolerances on angle, tangent length and ovality, if different from the code
CodeASME B16.49, ISO 15590-1 / EN 14870-1, EN 13480, or your project specification

Why one-piece bends save money on site

Each girth weld you remove saves welding, NDT, coating repair and inspection time on site. A bend with long tangents often replaces an elbow plus two pup pieces, which is three fewer welds per change of direction. On pipelines with many direction changes the saving is significant.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a tangent on a pipe bend?

A tangent is the straight length of pipe at each end of a bend, between the end of the bent section and the pipe end. Tangents make fit-up and welding easier and keep the girth weld away from the bent zone. They can be equal or different lengths.

Can you make a pipe bend at any angle?

Yes. Induction bends can be made at any angle up to 180°, for example 11.25°, 22.5° or 37°. Standard elbows only come in 45°, 90° and 180°, so custom angles avoid mitre cuts on site.

What is the minimum tangent length?

It depends on the size, wall and bending machine set-up, and the bending code may set a minimum. Send us the size and the tangent you need and we will confirm whether it can be made in one piece.

Can you make more than one bend in a single pipe?

Yes, where the pipe length and geometry allow. We need the radius and angle of each bend, the straight length between bends and the rotation between bend planes.

Do you need a drawing to quote?

A drawing or isometric extract is the quickest way, but a list of size, wall, grade, radius, angle and tangent lengths is enough for a first quotation.
