MSS SP-97 | Integrally reinforced | Run × branch to order
A sweepolet is a forged, integrally reinforced branch outlet that is contoured to the run pipe and joins it with a smooth, swept transition. Unlike a weldolet, which sits on top of the run with a fillet-type attachment weld, a sweepolet is welded to the run with a butt-type weld that can be fully radiographed or ultrasonically tested, and its smooth shape gives a low stress concentration. That makes it the preferred branch connection for high-pressure, high-temperature and cyclic service such as steam headers, offshore piping and compressor stations. We supply sweepolet-type outlets to MSS SP-97 in carbon, low-temperature, CrMo, stainless and duplex grades.

Sweepolet® is a registered trademark of Bonney Forge Corporation. We use it here only to describe the fitting type; Arshya supplies contoured, integrally reinforced branch outlets to MSS SP-97.
A sweepolet is a forged, integrally reinforced branch outlet that is contoured to the outside of the run pipe and has a smooth, swept transition to a buttweld branch. It is covered by MSS SP-97. The name is a trademark of Bonney Forge; the generic fitting is a contoured branch outlet.
A weldolet sits on the run pipe and is attached with a weld that is hard to examine by radiography. A sweepolet is shaped to fit the run and is attached with a butt-type weld that can be fully radiographed or ultrasonically tested. A sweepolet also has a lower stress concentration, so it is used for high-pressure, high-temperature and cyclic service.
A sweepolet only needs a hole in the run, so the run pipe is not cut and two girth welds are saved. A reducing tee is usually chosen for large branch-to-run ratios and for piggable lines, where a barred tee is needed. Your piping specification's branch table normally decides.
MSS SP-97, Integrally Reinforced Forged Branch Outlet Fittings, covers socket welding, threaded and buttwelding branch outlets. The design of the reinforcement is the manufacturer's, verified for the run and branch sizes and schedules.
Run size and wall, branch size and wall, material grade, design pressure and temperature, quantity, branch end preparation and the inspection certificate (3.1 or 3.2).
