ASTM A234 WP12 (P12) Pipe Fittings

1Cr-½Mo chrome-moly alloy steel buttweld pipe fittings for boiler headers, steam drums, and high-temperature piping to 540°C. The standard entry-level CrMo grade — lower silicon and chromium than WP11 — offering improved creep and oxidation resistance over carbon steel with straightforward welding and PWHT.

P12 carries lower silicon (0.15–0.50%) and chromium (0.80–1.25%) than P11. It is the standard 1Cr-½Mo CrMo grade for moderate-temperature boiler and steam service; P11's higher silicon gives it the edge in oxidising atmospheres.

Applications & PWHT Requirements

  • Boiler headers and steam drums — high-temperature steam service up to 540°C where oxidation resistance is a selection criterion
  • Superheater piping — coal-fired and gas-fired power boilers
  • Refinery and petrochemical steam piping — moderate-temperature CrMo service to 540°C
  • Heat exchangers — high-temperature process service with oxidising flue gas atmosphere
PWHT: All WP12 fittings require post-weld heat treatment at 690–750°C. Hardness after PWHT must be ≤197 HBW (Class 1) or ≤241 HBW (Class 2). PMI by XRF or OES is recommended to confirm Si content and distinguish WP12 from WP11 in the field.
