ASME B16.9 is the primary international standard for factory-made wrought buttweld pipe fittings — the backbone of high-pressure process and power piping. It defines dimensional requirements, pressure-temperature ratings, material specifications, tolerances, and marking for elbows (45°, 90°, 180° LR and SR), equal and reducing tees, concentric and eccentric reducers, pipe caps, lap joint stub ends, laterals, and crosses. Unlike flange standards (B16.5/B16.47), B16.9 does not assign independent pressure classes — ratings derive from the matching pipe wall thickness schedule. Arshya Pipe Fittings manufactures B16.9 fittings to all common material grades and schedules, with optional EN 10253 Type B supply for European projects.

ASME B16.9 does not assign independent pressure classes. The pressure-temperature rating of a buttweld fitting equals that of the connecting pipe of equivalent schedule and material. For example: a 6" Sch 40 CS WPB 90° elbow to B16.9 carries the same pressure rating as 6" Sch 40 A106 Gr.B pipe — approximately 1480 psi at 100°F, reducing to 750 psi at 800°F. Check ASME B31.3 (or applicable code) pressure tables for the specific material and temperature in service. Do not attempt to mix schedules across the fitting-pipe joint without code compliance verification.
ASME B16.9 covers dimensional and pressure integrity requirements for factory-made wrought buttweld pipe fittings NPS ½ through NPS 48. The standard specifies: (1) Dimensions for elbows (45°, 90°, 180° LR and SR), equal and reducing tees, concentric and eccentric reducers, pipe caps, lap joint stub ends, laterals, and crosses. (2) Pressure-temperature ratings based on matching pipe wall thickness schedules — no independent pressure class. (3) Material requirements referencing ASTM standards (A234, A403, A420, A860, B366, etc.). (4) Tolerances on center-to-end, face-to-face, and OD. (5) Marking: manufacturer, material grade, schedule/wall, heat/lot number, B16.9 identifier. Referenced in ASME B31.1 (Power Piping), B31.3 (Process Piping), B31.4, and B31.8.
ASME B16.9 (US/international standard) and EN 10253 (European standard) cover the same product — buttweld pipe fittings — with several key differences: (1) Wall thickness: ASME B16.9 matches nominal pipe schedule; EN 10253 Type B has heavier wall at bends/crotch, more conservative than Type A. (2) Size system: ASME B16.9 uses NPS (inches); EN 10253 uses DN (mm). (3) Mill certificate: ASME B16.9 requires an ASTM CMTR; EN 10253 Type B mandatorily requires EN 10204 3.1 (heat-specific, QC inspector-certified). (4) PED compliance: EN 10253 Type B is designed for PED 2014/68/EU; ASME B16.9 is not automatically PED-compliant. (5) Cost: EN 10253 Type B is typically 15–25% higher than ASME B16.9 in the same material. Arshya supplies both — specify on RFQ.
ASME B16.9 covers long radius elbows (LR — center-to-face = 1.5 × NPS) and 45° elbows, plus all other standard buttweld fittings. ASME B16.28 (Wrought Butt Welding Short Radius Elbows and Returns) covers short radius (SR) 90° elbows (center-to-face = 1.0 × NPS) and 180° SR return bends (center-to-center = 2.0 × NPS). In practice, ASME B16.9 LR elbows are preferred for most process and power piping — lower pressure drop and better flow characteristics. SR elbows (B16.28) are used only where space is severely constrained (instrument rack piping, utility headers, HVAC). For high-pressure, high-velocity, or erosive service, always prefer B16.9 LR elbows.
