EN ISO 3183 Pipeline Grade Pipe Fittings

High-yield pipeline steel buttweld fittings to EN ISO 3183 for natural gas transmission, crude oil trunk lines, and offshore risers. L-grades are the European and international designation for what the API system calls X-grades and ASTM calls WPHY. Charpy V-notch impact testing mandatory from L360 (X52) upward.

EN ISO 3183 Pipeline Grade Range

L290 · X42 · WPHY 42
Min YS: 290 MPa
Low-pressure gas gathering lines. Legacy grade largely superseded by L360.
L320 · X46 · WPHY 46
Min YS: 320 MPa
Intermediate grade for moderate-pressure gas distribution networks.
L360 · X52 · WPHY 52 ★
Min YS: 360 MPa
Most widely used pipeline grade globally. Onshore gas transmission standard grade.
L390 · X56 · WPHY 56
Min YS: 390 MPa
Intermediate high-yield grade for elevated operating pressure pipelines.
L415 · X60 · WPHY 60 ★
Min YS: 415 MPa
High-pressure gas transmission. Common on major European cross-country pipelines.
L450 · X65 · WPHY 65 ★
Min YS: 450 MPa
Offshore risers, deepwater pipelines, high-pressure compressor station headers.
L485 · X70 · WPHY 70
Min YS: 485 MPa
Long-distance high-pressure gas transmission. Requires TMCP or Q+T processing.

EN ISO 3183 vs ASTM A860 WPHY — Differences

  • Naming convention: EN uses minimum yield in MPa (L360 = 360 MPa min YS). API uses yield in ksi (X52 = 52 ksi min YS = 358 MPa). ASTM uses WPHY + ksi. All three refer to the same grade.
  • PSL1 vs PSL2: EN ISO 3183 aligns with API 5L PSL2 requirements — tighter chemistry (CE, S, P) and mandatory Charpy. PSL1 is the lower tier without impact testing.
  • Sour service: For H₂S-containing gas, specify ISO 3183 with annexe H (NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156) HRC ≤22 hardness limit. Grade stays the same; testing and traceability are added.
  • Pipe vs fittings standard: EN ISO 3183 covers pipe. Fittings of the same grade are supplied to EN 10253-2 Type B or ASME B16.9 / MSS SP-75 using equivalent chemistry.
