ASME B16.11 is the American standard for forged fittings, socket-welding and threaded. It covers dimensions, tolerances, ratings, marking and material requirements for classes 2000#, 3000#, 6000# and 9000# fittings in all standard material grades.

What is the difference between socket weld and threaded forged fittings?

Socket weld fittings have a recessed bore (socket) into which the pipe end is inserted and then fillet welded. Threaded fittings have NPT (National Pipe Taper) or BSPT internal threads for screwed connections without welding. Socket weld gives a stronger, leak-tight joint; threaded fittings allow disassembly.

Pipe end is inserted into a socketed recess and fillet welded at the exterior. Creates a permanent, strong, leak-tight joint. Preferred for high-pressure, high-temperature applications where disassembly is not required.
